Located in Columbus’s historic neighborhood of German Village, Kittie’s Cakes’ first storefront is a renovated building that features original hardwood floors, pressed tin ceiling and simple, beautiful original windows. Adding only what they needed for baking and retail, Gieseke Rosenthal Architecture + Design (GRA+D) let the bones of the space speak for itself.

Fundamentally, the buildout is a large open kitchen with a center island that features suspended storage above. This defines the work area and accommodates the specific workflow for the bakery. Beyond the kitchen a small “living space” accommodates office functions as well as a meeting space for prospective clients. Views to the outside and into the kitchen lee the relatively small size of the space allowed for customers providing a net effect of an intimate yet active space within the city.
