Overlooking the Hocking River it the Athens location for this Columbus based design firm was designed with the general flow of the building to that match that of the river. Broken up into three units, the site houses BDT on the western end and a health clinic on the eastern end. Due to its proximity to the river and the surrounding soil being primarily silt, the building sits atop a steel frame connected to concrete piers that then transferred the load to auger cast piles as deep as 45 feet below ground. Due to this unique technique, the area is able to maintain its natural ecosystem and the river will be allowed to flood as it normally does. The main exterior is clad in a wood finish that can be seen not only in the exterior, but throughout the interior as well with exposed beams, seen throughout every space. Connecting all three spaces is not only a wrap around porch that surrounds the north and south facades, but also a clearstory that runs throughout the entire length of the building. With the building primarily facing south, the majority of windows on the south side allowing an abundance of natural light to filter through. This is especially evident in the health clinic: the exam rooms are made up of a curtain wall.
