The new U.S. Grant Bridge gracefully spans the Ohio River, connecting Portsmouth, Ohio, and Fullerton, Ky. HNTB designed the 1,682-foot cable-stayed structure. It replaced the crossing's original suspension bridge that was built in 1927, which provided only two narrow traffic lanes that no longer supported maximum weight loads and increasing commuter needs. As the design consultant, HNTB performed the type study, planned the demolition of the existing bridge, designed the approach spans and the cable-stayed main span unit of the replacement bridge and provided construction phase services for the demolition and construction. Key issues addressed as part of the design included site factors, navigational requirements, community input, scour, barge impact, right-of-way requirements, vertical alignment and impacts on the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers levee protecting the city of Portsmouth.
